After our first successful season in 2012, our colony has continued to grow! This BLOG is the history of our Purple Martin Journey at Meadow Wood Elementary!
A Successful Nesting Season!
Sunday, July 8, 2012
Well, I went up to check the birds and as predicted...we only have one nest left with babies. When I come in the morning, there are usually TONS of martins. However, at 4:00 today it was VERY quiet! We did find a sparrow nest in one of the Martin's old nests! We thought that was pretty smart of them instead of starting all over!
As soon as I get the pics, I will post.
During one visit, we had a few questions, so here are answers that Jayden found!
1) Where do purple martins sleep? If they have not fledged yet, they sleep in the nest box or gourd. If they have fledged, they sleep in areas that they think are okay to perch in.
2) How many purple martin babies did MWE have this year? Jayden calculated that there were six nests of purple martins, each with 4 young, except one nest that had 3.
He wrote the problem like this: 4+4+4+4+4+3=23 The answer is 23 new purple martins!
Rain Fledgling Update
Day 12 of this terrible weather and all but 1 of the babies are holding
their own. I am fattening them up but with more heavy rain in the forecast,

Welcome to the Meadow Wood Elementary Purple Martin Blog
After almost 3 school years, we FINALLY have our first purple martins that are nesting in our pods. This is a very exciting time for our students! Each morning the second graders check the pods for sparrow nests so that they can be removed in order to help the martins. The purpose of this blog is to provide the students a chance to keep up with what is happening in the purple martin nest while they are not in school!
